BLADES

PROCESS

At naroe blades I offer one of a kind, handmade knives with complete control of the process from inception to finished product.

My philosophy at naroe blades is raw simplicity. I love including glimpses of the blades raw origins in the final product of the knife. naroe blades may be simple at first glance but there is so much that goes into creating each unique knife.

Each knife begins as a single piece of stainless steel, high carbon steel, or a combination of different types of high carbon steel; forge welded at extremely high temperatures, cut, restacked and forge welded again to create a billet of pattern welded steel or ‘damascus’. I then often sandwich this billet between two softer layers of low carbon or stainless steel to create a “san-mai” billet of steel.

Taking this billet I begin forging the blade. Cutting and upsetting the tang, drawing down the heel of the blade then drawing out the length. I pride myself on forging the blades as thin and light as possible. This is to reduce the amount of grinding and waste while keeping the beautifully raw, forged flats of the knife untouched. This also aids the balance of the whole knife keeping the balance point right at the front of the handle.

Proper heat treatment of knives is one of the most important parts of the process. To extract the very best performance out of the knives I rely on temperature precise, electronically controlled kilns, combined with proven heat treating recipes. Each knife is individually quenched in industry leading quench oils according to the type of steel and the rate at which it needs to cool. I leave nothing up to chance for repeatable and consistent results.

The blades are then ground and hand sanded and polished. To bring out the layers in the damascus blades I etch and polish multiple times to bring out the subtle layers in the steel.

Each of the blades is paired with a handle crafted from a single piece of hardwood of the highest quality, sourced from our own backyard, Australia, or the most exotic locations from around the world. I take the utmost care to shape and polish each handle to keep the crisp lines flowing from the tip of the blade all the way to the end of the handle.
